Married to the Material

            Married to the Material

  • This is the ‘Age of the Material’ more than at any other time in history. The attachment to the material as a high life objective is making it a pseudo religion. The greater the interest in the material, the less meaningful interest in religion, the spiritual, or more importantly, self inner evolvement. At best, the so called ‘materialists’, who of course are in denial of that, are consumed with the pleasure of their appetites and wants. The ‘materialist’ is likely to be very possessive of their ‘stash’ of all things adding to their ‘collection’ and entertainment. There is great pride in their cunningness and abilities to do anything while ignoring their inner development and sensitivity to those in need.
  • There is nothing wrong with the material and entertainment, but the attachment creates the pursuit to be akin to a drug, making one a material ‘druggie’. Material druggie’s have nothing more than a thin veneer of anything resembling personal evolvement beyond honing the skills of expanding the cache of toys that they cannot take with them to the ‘golf course in the sky’. Most of the rich are really the same as the poor, but with more wherewithal to parade their non inner accomplishments.
  • A rich example of what I’m talking about is in the many ‘pocket communities of the rich’ scattered around the US often in the idyllic locations (I live in one) where the rich have a  home (one of many?) Two of these communities that I’ve had connections with are Sarasota, Florida  and Hilton Head, South Carolina. Hilton Head is a sterile, rich community of 40,000, and with ’20 Golf Courses’!!! Ex executives of corporations and other ‘material religion wealthy’ bask in their greedy entitlements oblivious to their unique position to make a real social difference at this time in history. Positive change was never more important to the soul of America in light of the spiraling technological achievements which are contributing to the malaise, apathy, dumbing down, and fears of most people than now.

Living in wealth is rarely not basking in it and being oblivious to inner developments of love, compassion, and all inner riches. I was in the open door of that life style in New York city with a 40th floor balcony apartment overlooking Central Park. The temptation was there to walk away from all but teflon spiritual meaning because having lots of money coming in puts you to sleep in what Thorstein Veblen’s writing in the early 20th century identified as ‘the entitilements of the leisure class’. Life in the 21st century is about individual and collective activism to make it a more conscious world. Are you ‘really’ doing your part, rich or poor. Why be a ‘sleeple’ or sheeple? Love and ‘knowing thyself’ are the greatest riches!
